MUMBAI: Following legendary singer Asha Bhosle’s recent plea to safeguard her personal rights, the Bombay High Court on Friday extended similar urgent interim protection to action star Suniel Shetty against unknown individuals and certain e-commerce platforms accused of violating his rights.
Justice Arif Doctor, while granting the relief, emphasized that the “unauthorized creation and uploading of deepfake images of the Plaintiff (Shetty) on social media platforms constitutes a serious infringement—not only of his personality rights but also of his fundamental right to live with dignity.”
The court further stated, “Similarly, the unauthorized use of AI-generated images of the Plaintiff and his family members is a blatant invasion of their privacy and fundamental rights. Personality rights include the ability to control, protect, and commercially exploit one’s own image, name, likeness, and other identifiable attributes.”
During the hearing, Senior Counsel Birendra Saraf and Advocate Janay Jain represented Shetty, 64. The court noted in its order that this unauthorized exploitation not only harms the actor’s commercial interests, right to privacy, and dignity but also poses a significant risk to the public, who place trust in his goodwill.
